Earlier called the Chintamani fort, the beautiful Mehrangarh Fort is one of
largest forts in India, located in the picturesque city of Jodhpur. Built in
the era of Jaswant Singh, the fort covers over 5 kms. and is located on top
of a hill 125 meters high. Owing to its invincible fortifications, which at
places has 17 feet thick and 68 feet high walls, Mehrangarh fort has never
ever been seized. To enter the Mehrangarh fort, seven gates have to be
crossed. Some of these gates still bear marks of many sieges that this fort
has withstood. The beauty and the grandeur of the palaces inside the fort
narrates & displays the talent, hard work and dedication of the skilled
Jodhpuri sculptures.
Once inside the fort, the marvelous sculptures and carvings will astonish
every visitor.
Moti Mahal was the dwelling place of the royal throne
of Jodhpur and was popularly referred to as the Sringar Chowki in local
parlance. The majestic
Umaid Villas displays some remarkable
Rajasthani miniature art work. The
Ajit Villa has a rich collection
of musical instruments and regal attires while the
Maan Villa
exhibits the arsenal and weaponry of the house of Rathores.
The other attractions of this magnificent fort are the number of galleries
which include elephant
daulat khana, howdah gallery, palanquin gallery
etc. Mehrangarh fort also houses one of the finest
museums of
Rajasthan, which displays an array of items including old royal palanquins,
arms, costumes, paintings, decorated period rooms like, the
Phool Mahal,
Sheesh Mahal, Jhanki Mahal etc.
