Umaid Bhawan Jaipur was one of the last royal constructions in Rajasthan. A
splendid example of Indo-colonial and art deco style of the 1930s, the
construction of this palace is unique as there is no use of cement or
mortar. Carved stones have been conjoined by a unique technique of
interlocking positive and negative pieces. Named after Maharaja Umaid Singh,
this palace is one of the world's largest private residence, with 347 rooms.
Umaid Bhawan Palace was called Chittar Palace during its construction owing
to its location Chittar Hill, the highest point in Jodhpur. Maharaja Umaid
Singh, was an admirer of western lifestyles, the reflection of which can be
seen in the architecture. Now a part of the Taj Hotels, this Umaid Bhawan
Palace is a delight for the visitors.
The palace has been divided into three parts; in one part, functions a
hotel, in the second, a museum and the third house belongs to the royal
family. The main attractions of the palace include the Throne Room which has
the fascinating Ramayana murals. A wood-paneled library, indoor swimming
pool, a billiards room, marble squash courts, etc., are some places to
relish. This museum in Jodhpur is an architectural marvel and displays the
elite range of items belonging to the Maharaja and the imperial family like
clocks, glass, porcelain, furniture, crockery, cutler and weapons, stuffed
leopards, clocks, etc. Umaid Bhawan also holds photos and manuscripts, old
