Located at a distance of around 39 km from Kota, Taragarh Fort was the home
of a major princely state during the Rajput's heydays. Located in the
Nagpahari of Aravalli ranges, this fort is of immense archaeological and
historical importance. It is a massive fort accessible by a steep pitched
road leading to its main gateway. The fort has three gateways, namely
Lakshmi Pol, Phuta Darwaza and Gagudi ki Phatak, and are adorned by rampant
elephants that top these gateways. Though the most impressive parts of the
fort are in ruins, it is still a must visit fort for all.
Taragarh fort was renowned for its tunnels crisscrossing the entire
hillside, which helped the king and his deputies to flee in case of danger
to their lives. The Taragarh fort has huge water reservoirs, which were
built to store water and supply it to the residents during the time of
crisis. These reservoirs have been carved out of a rocky base of the fort
and it is said that if released in full force, the water from the reservoir
can wash away people residing below. The fort also has massive stone tower
within the fort complex called Bhim Burj. This tower was built to house a
huge cannon named Garbha Gunjan, which is regarded as the second largest
cannon in India.
Rani Mahal is a small palace within the fort complex, which was occupied by
the wives and concubines of rulers. The Taragarh Fort also has Miran Saheb
ki Dargha , built in the memory of Miran Saheb, who was the governor of the
fort and laid down his life in an encounter.
