Jaisalmer Fort is the second oldest fort in Rajasthan. Two hundred and
fifty feet tall, this fort stands at the top of 80m high Trikuta hill. The
outer wall of the palace, house and temples are made of soft yellow
sandstone. It has 99 bastions, 92 of which were built between 1633 and 1647.
It has narrow winding lanes and four huge gateways, the last gate leads to
main chowk, which is dominated by the old palace of the Maharwal. The fort
has a number of wells, which still are a regular source of water to almost
one fourth of the cities population.
Jaisalmer fort is simply captivating by the nightfall. Made of sand stones,
this fort is locally known as Sonar Quila, and dominates all the structures
amidst sands. It is approached through Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol, Bhoot Pol and
Hawa Pol. The fort has many beautiful havelies and a group of Jain temples
dating from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Jaisalmer fort is one of the
marvels of Rajasthani architecture, particularly of the stone-carver’s
art.
