Wildlife Parks In India

Dudhwa National Park

Geo details
Location: : Lakhimpur (Kheri), UP, India
Area: 490 km² core, 124 km² buffer

Introduction
Dudhwa National Park Dudhwa National Park lies amid the warm, tropical forests of the Terai, in the foothills of the Himalayas. It is the largest and thickest forest reserve of India. The park's thick Sal forest, extensive grasslands and marshes harbor a wide range of wildlife. It is a home for over 38 species of mammals, 16 species of reptiles and numerous birds.

Dudhwa has the distinction of having the largest surviving population of this endangered species. The great Indian One horned Rhino, which was hunted out of existence is now the part of wild family in the park. However, the main attraction of the park is its Swamp Deers (Barasingha) and Tigers. The park is famous for untiring efforts of 'Billy' Arjan Singh, the conservationist who played an instrumental role in creation of Dudhwa as sanctuary for Swamp Deer.

The swampy land and marshes is a haven for numerous species of birds both local and migratory. There are spectacular painted storks, black and white necked storks, cranes and owls. Colourful woodpeckers, barbets, kingfishers, minivets, bee eaters, and bulbuls flit through the forest canopy painting the sky. A natural paradise, Dudhwa protects its wild habitat from the depredations of an expanding human population.

Flora
The dense forests at Dudhai is reminiscent of the forests of Bardia on the Nepal, with huge Sal trees, tall termite mounds, patches of riverine forests and large open grasslands. Major fauna at the park includes Shorea robusta, Terminalis tomentosa, A dinacordifolia, Terminalia belerica, Eugenia jambolana, Dalbergia sissoo and Bombax malabaricum.

Fauna
Mammals: Tiger, Elephant, Jackal, Sloth Bear, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Civet, Fishing Cat, Rhinoceros, Sambar, Wild Boar and Ratel.

Fishes: Ninety species of fishes identified.
Birds: Around four hundred species of local and migratory bird identified.
Endangered Species: Tiger, Swamp Deer, Leapord, Ratel, Hispid Hare, Black necked stork and Bengal Florician
